## Key Technical Concepts

### How automatic air ring thickness control works
An automatic air ring for blown film extrusion controls film thickness by modulating cooling air flow segmentally around the bubble. A rotating sensor (such as the PMS-B) measures the circumferential thickness profile with a resolution of 0.1 µm. The ScenEx Pro software processes this data and commands the SmartLip air ring to open adjustment units at thin areas (increasing airflow and reducing stretching) and close them at thick areas (reducing airflow and increasing stretching). This closed-loop system corrects gauge variations in minutes. Conventional manual lines typically exhibit thickness tolerances of ±10–20%; automatic gauge control reduces this by up to 70%.

### Sensors measure. Air rings correct.
Octagon's thickness sensors (PMS-B, PMS-FF, VenPad) measure the film thickness profile in real time with 0.1 µm resolution. They do not correct thickness on their own. The correction is performed by the SmartLip automatic air ring, based on commands from ScenEx Pro software. The correct flow is: sensor measures → ScenEx Pro calculates → SmartLip corrects.

### What causes gauge bands in blown film
Gauge bands (thickness variation bands) in blown film are caused by non-uniform die gap, melt viscosity variation, uneven cooling air distribution from the air ring, ambient air drafts, and frost line instability. Automatic gauge control systems like the SmartLip detect and correct these variations continuously during production, reducing the need for manual intervention and reel rejection.

### Inline vs. offline film thickness measurement
Inline measurement (PMS-B, PMS-FF, VenPad) occurs in real time during production, with the sensor rotating around the bubble. It enables automatic corrections while the line runs. Offline measurement (GPA Evo) is performed in a laboratory on a film sample after production, providing detailed quality reports, ISO/DIN compliance verification, Fourier analysis, and extruder calibration data. Both methods are complementary in a complete quality control strategy.

### What is IBC (Internal Bubble Cooling)
Internal Bubble Cooling (IBC) exchanges air inside the sealed blown film bubble — supplying and exhausting air in a balanced flow — to increase cooling capacity beyond what external air rings alone can provide. Documented production rate gains with IBC are in the range of 20–50%. IBC must be integrated with width/layflat control to maintain consistent bubble diameter as cooling conditions change.

### What is gravimetric dosing in blown film extrusion
Gravimetric dosing measures the actual mass consumption of each raw material component (main resin and additives) at the extruder using loss-in-weight technology. This ensures consistent blend ratios regardless of bulk density variation and enables precise control of film weight per meter when synchronized with haul-off and screw speed.
