What is the calibration basket and why is it essential?

Octagon’s Calibration Basket is an advanced control and stabilization system for blown film extrusion.

Developed to provide maximum precision, stability and durability, Octagon’s calibration basket redefines bubble control standards in plastic film extruders.

Primary function in the process:

The calibration basket plays a fundamental role in blown film extrusion, especially during the first cooling stages. Installed right above the die head and air ring, it stabilizes the bubble to ensure uniform cooling throughout the entire circumference.

This stability is crucial to avoid deformations caused by air flow oscillations — common in high-output lines. With the bubble under control, the film exhibits better uniformity and surface finish.

Additionally, the calibration basket reduces vibrations that could compromise the dimensional precision of the film. This is vital to maintain quality standards and repeatability.

Models with radial supports further enhance this control, distributing support along the lay-flat width. The result is a more stable process, with real gains in uniformity, productivity and waste reduction.

Innovative Radial System

The radial system calibration basket model means that the rollers always move in a radial and centralized manner towards the bubble. This way, the ultrasonic sensors fixed on the moving arms of the calibration basket are always pointed at the bubble center, with no deviation in their measurement, ensuring precision in the IBC control system measurement.

Intelligent modular construction

Modular construction, with frame for height adjustment, and basket for diameter adjustment, providing greater versatility and ease of maintenance.

Complementary secondary calibration system

Octagon’s secondary basket acts as a bubble support system, offering additional stabilization and eliminating residual vibrations to ensure even more precise measurements. This complementary component integrates perfectly with SmartLip ONE, optimizing automatic adjustments and contributing to superior blown film quality, even in high-speed operations.

5-level roller system:

16 contact points

5 roller levels, with 8 arms and dual rollers in V-Format, resulting in 16 contact points around the bubble, ensuring perfect bubble embrace and consequently excellent stabilization.

Vital importance

From a manufacturing standpoint, blown film offers advantages for controlling thickness variation, the bubble is typically rotated as the film is extruded and wound. This distributes and mitigates some variations.

Cooling technology

The molten material is forced through a die with pre-established dimensions to compose a preform, which is inflated with compressed air until reaching the diameter corresponding to the established width for the film reel. This bubble will be gradually flattened by a set known as the collapsing frame.
